“Top quality canvas and veg tanned leather, the duffle may look like quite a simple affair and in some respects it is. However, there is a lot more going on than meets the eye. The opening of the bag uses a sailing dry bag inspired 3 roll closure which is water and dust proof and doesn’t have small components like zip teeth that are susceptible to mechanical failure. The clip used is a Ronstan sailing marine grade stainless steel snap hook. Like the wallet, the stitching in the duffle base is countersunk into a channel in 2.5mm thick vegetable tanned saddlery leather this protects the thread from any abrasion. Why is this so special? Typically when stitching leather on an industrial machine a bladed needle will be used. This makes it easier to keep seams straight and for the needle to pass through the leather with less resistance, typically a nylon thread will also be used, in this example however a round needle is used making the task of aligning the thread into the channel extremely difficult. So why use a rounded needle? Canvas, if a bladed needle were to pass through the leather and through the canvas it would cut the cotton fibres meaning the canvas would not retain the same water repellent properties when it gets wet and the fibres swell with moisture. Using a round needle spreads the fibres apart carrying the poly cotton thread through the canvas without damaging the structure of the material. Why use a poly cotton thread? The cotton content of the thread is also very important for a similar reason, when the thread gets wet it will swell and create a seal between itself and the canvas. To finish the bag off the English bridle hide shoulder strap is anchored to the stainless steel D ring using the Kimberly knot and an internal stainless steel saddle provides a handy point to clip keys or a small torch”
